Even though your phosphate is showing zero it may well still be there but being used up by the algae.
Try to remove as much algae as you can by hand and even better remove the rock and scrub it in old tank water.
A good phosphate test kit to get is the D&D which is much more sensitive than salifert.

Sazmo is right. Your algae is absorbing it as fast as you feed. (most food has phosphate in it)
You'll have to get in there and remove what you can.
you could grow a macro algae (cheato) in a fuge so that it doesn't grow in your tank. if you grow tooooo much you'll starve your corals too. most people don't have that problem, but just trying to keep you aware...
you could feed a little less, but i don't know how much you are feeding or the number of animals in your tank...
some crabs and snails will eat it when it is short enough. crabs can eat snails though, but that is a trade a lot of people make. you should decided if you want crabs for yourself or not. Just don't all of a sudden tell the missus that you got crabs... hehe

Re: HELP why am i algae???????????

    Hi thanks for the replys
in my refugium i do grow cheato as for feeding my fish they get fed every other day with as much as they can eat in 2 mins either flake, pellet (new era) or frozen (and i thaw this out on kitchen paper 1st as the juices help cause phos) and the coral food i use if you have not heard of it it called reef bugs and what you do is take out a glass of tank water put in the right measured amount leave for 15 mins stir leavefor another 15 mins stir then add to your tank beacuse what you are doing is hatching live bugs that are found in the sea and here s the good part these bugs help clean the tank, their own waste and feed the corals and fish also (so the packet says) sounds good and i tell you what i have never seen my corals open up even my coco worm as good when i use it (and i have used super green, gro tech plankto)
But i have today just change my phos remover (last changed 3 weeks ago) seachem so i will see how it goes as before i change it there was red hair algae on my glass at the bottom by the sand i have scraped it off so i will see if its back in a couple of days but does anyone have any other ideas ??
    cheers

    Hi man,

well hermits tend to do much better at eating hair algae than snails. Another surgestion is to get a fish or two that love algae. If ur tank is big enough...i'd surgest a yellow tang.

Feedingwise...im a bit shocked that u only feed once every two days. I have a 5ft 700L reef tank with 7 fish which are 2 clowns, sixline wrasse, Radiant wrasse, midas blenny, firefish and a foxface. I feed this lot 3 times a day!!! I thawout 2 frozen cubes in tank water, then throw away the thawed out water (with all the phosphates in ) and out the thawed out food in a syringe in the fridge. This lasts two days with 3 feeds each day. REMEMBER...it is much better to feed LITTLE AND OFTEN. When I started and had just the two clowns...i still fed 3 times a day...just less.

    And possibly your corals

I had one once and it ripped some of my frags apart  Best option is to get a sea hare and when all the algae is gone either feed it on nori sheets or pass it onto someone else with hair algae problems! I had hair algae for months invested £££'s in phosphate reactors and the like and finally bought a sea hare, he ate all the algae and never had a problem with it again!

    Thanks!

Re: HELP why am i algae???????????

    Hi thanks for your replys
after changing the phos remover for fresh stuff i cleaned the glass like i mentioned and the next day the fine thread like red algae was back all over the glass down by the sand (why is this?) so now i have just done a 2 day black out no tank lights except moonlighting (find out in the afternoon if it worked)
I know some will say my feeding out my fish is a little but i can tell you they are chubby little sods but in all i have to feed like this as my tank is only a nano
As for a sea hare the only ones i have seen are about 6-8" which are far too big for my tank and even though they would eat the algae i still wont solve my problem as somthing is making it grow in the first place and not only that boy are they ugly muthers
But on a serious note im thinking i have done nothing diffrent in a year except doing a weekly 4 gal water change instead of a 2.5 and the only things i have added are corals so im thinking have some of my micro critters died out out from say over breeding ? would it be good if i got some live coepods (from ebay ) to help kick start the system again or is there some other bugs i could get anyone!!
    cheers

how much to feed also depends on your tank. in my current main tank (6'x 2'x 27") with one blue-yellow tail I've only feed my nems and cleaner shimp. there are enough "bugs" in there that he doesn't go hungry. my 250 l tank i used to have with 6-7 fish. i would feed a little 3-4 times a day...
you could try brighter lights on your fuge. or maybe us xenia also to absorb NO3... of course bigger water changes will help and it isn't soooo hard for you to do on a nano. if you did have more room for a tang i would go with a brown Scopas (might have spelled that wrong) tang
