    Miracle Mud system

    Hi all

I would liek to see what people's opinion would be on a miracle mud ecosystem filtration for my new tank.

I am converting an old sump into a large ecosystem filter and it wil be just that miracle mud, caulerpa algae and then returned into the main display. I am selling my APF600 skimmer (pm me for details if interested) and I will be using carbon once a month passively in the sump compartment before the return.

I am hoping to set up a fragging system mext to my new tank which may have a small hang on protein skimmer for when I chop up corals and place them onto the egg crate racking.

I have my RSM at the moment and this is going really well on fauna marine method - it is definitely ULNS 0ppm NO3, 0.015ppm PO4 so it seems to be working well.

I am now dosing 0.5ml of vodka each day building up to the FM dose of 1.0ml per day.

With the MM system it is very simple and the FM method will not be used instead I will be harvesting the algae and will be offering this for CS members for free or any small frags people can spare.

I wil be posting my progress on here and other forums so lets hope if works out lol

Vodka provides a carbon source for the bacteria in the tank - to grow - basically bacteria need Nitrogen, Phosphate and Carbon to grow - the amount of carbon is a limiting factor in bacxteria blooms so you add ethanol (vodka) to provide the carbon source so that the bacteria grows taking up Nitrogen (Nitrate) and phosphates - this is then removed from the tank using a skimmer - thus exporting nutrients from the system.

I was using ultrabak which essentially is ethanol and other ingredients - its

Are you also measuring phosphate levels?
Alcohol is classed as a poison and is basically a carbon-hydrogen-oxygen chain. The bacteria in a marine tank break it up and when it does this the carbon becomes free.Disadvantages are the free oxygen will join with potassium to make phosphates and the hydrogen with nitrogen to make ammonia.
A safe way to achieve the same result is slow bubbling of carbon dioxide.

Excellent then - as I will be adding a source of bacteria which will denitrify and de phosph'ify' these products aswell plus I am running rowaphos and carbon -

I just want to see whether I can get the same results as Julian Sprung and err the other bloke that I cant remember the name of

PS - everything is a poison - Oxygen, Water, Hydrogen, at the right levels it can kill anything. As my chemistry teacher always said that there is no such thing as a non toxic substance - literally everything is toxic

The vodka I am using is 30% alcohol 70% water(?dunno) plus I am dosing 0.7ml per 130 litres which is very dilute.

The ultralith stones also take up phosphate and nitrates -

I suppose I should keep regular records for prosperity
